Scary beautiful

Scary beautiful is the name given to these strange shoes, which would make even Lady Gaga think twice. It’s certainly a unique design. The shoe sits backwards on the foot with the feet pointing 90° down as if wearing ballet shoes and the shins lean forward at almost 45°.

Scary Beautiful is a collaboration piece between artist Leanie van der Vyver and René van den Berg, a Dutch shoe designer. Apparently the shoes were designed to “challenge our current beauty ideals by inflicting an unexpected new beauty standard.”

As shoes I find them ridiculous, I can’t see how it would even be possible to walk in them. However, as a piece of art I find the shoes interesting and thought provoking. Obviously they are exaggerated but they do show the way women go to great lengths to follow fashion. We often push ourselves to our limits in the name of fashion and beauty, cramming our feet into sky high heels or enduring painful beauty treatments and its easy to blindly follow fashion even to the point where you look ridiculous. This piece makes me wonder if we were suddenly told by all the fashion magazines that ‘backwards shoes’ were the next big trend how many of us would rush out and buy a pair?

What do people think of the shoes? Love them or hate them there is no denying they are scary beautiful!

  1. I hate to be unfashion-forward; but these are grotesque. As fashion; as art – does not matter. But thanks for blogging about them……I’ve seen pictures of them before; just not close up.

  2. Wow, these are so scary but so incredible! Quite impressed! I don’t understand how they work or if you could actually walk in them!!
I think one more for gaga or an exhibition!!!
